A mobile court sitting in Abaji, an area in the Federal Capital Territory has ordered eight violators of the interstate travel ban to sweep premises of the Local Education Authority (LEA) primary school in the area.

The Federal Government had handed down an inter-state ban on travellers as part of measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

The presiding magistrate of the mobile court, Ibrahim A. Yusuf, who disclosed this to our reporter yesterday, said 110 other violators were fined while 32 were discharged.

He said 115 travellers including motorists were arrested by the enforcement team on the COVID -19 restrictions and arraigned at the mobile court.

According to him, some of the arrested motorists attempted to manoeuvre their way through the border checkpoint in Abaji, which shares boundary between FCT and Kogi State.

He added that the violators were arraigned for not using face mask, overloading and route violation.

I’m Only Answerable To the President – Gambari

The new Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, said yesterday that by virtue of his duty, he is only answerable to President Muhammadu Buhari and not the public.

Gambari stated this yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during a brief chat with State House reporters. Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), 1990 to 1999, thanked President Buhari for the opportunity to serve him and the country.

When asked about what Nigerians should expect from him, Gambari said: “I have not started, so I will find out and maybe… I don’t report directly to the nation, I report directly to the president.”

On what the president should expect from him, the new Chief of Staff said: “I think he needs my loyalty, competence and support.”

On what would be his guiding principle as the chief of staff, Gambari said: “To serve the president to the best of my ability.”

President Buhari had earlier unveiled his new chief of staff shortly before the start of the inaugural virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at exactly 11:30am.

The indigene of Ilorin in Kwara State was presented to council by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, shortly after a minute’s silence observed in honour of former members of the Federal Executive Council at various times, including former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, late Chief Richard Akinjide, the late chief of staff, Malam Abba Kyari, former minister of health, Halilu Alhassan, and former minister of state for public health during the second republic Paul Wampana.

Breaking: Buba Galadima Sighted at Atiku’s Press Briefing

It appears Engr Buba Galadima has been released as he was sighted at the press briefing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Galadima was seen at Yar’Adua center venue of the press briefing at about 4:36pm decked in a brown sleeveless agbada and a red face cap.

On his arrival to the venue he was ushered to a front row seat of the main hall of the center.   Party members immediately gathered around him in obvious solidarity to his recent ordeal at the hand of alleged security operatives.

Recall the TheColumn has earlier reported that Ologbondiyan announced that armed security operatives whisked Galadima away on Sunday. He did not however, say where and when the incident happened.

“Nigerians and the world over should know this— Alhaji Buba Galadima has just been kidnapped by masked security operatives, his whereabouts is unknown. Buhari/APC are hell bent on destroying our hard earned democracy. We will never be cowed, the will of the people MUST prevail,” he tweeted.

INEC: “APC Has No Guber Candidates in Rivers & Zamfara”

Going by the final list releaesed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday 2nd february 2019 for gubernatorial candidates and House of Assembly candidates for the March 2 election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in both Rivers and Zamfara States won’t be fielding any candidates.

In a similar development, despiote the consistent insistence by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that the candidature of Senator Buruji Kashamu wont be up-holding, the Senator again floored the PDP, making the final list of the commission as the Ogun State gubernatorial candidate of the party.

These developement stemmed from the reveiew of the respective
court judgments delivered last week by a Federal High Court in Abuja and Zamfara State High Court in Gusau, the ruling APC did not conduct party primaries in the state.

These details were contained in a statement signed by the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Festus Okoye, and made available to the press (details culled from ThisDay Newspapers).

Mr. Festus stated: “INEC met today, 30th January 2019 and, among other things, approved the final list of candidates for the governorship, state assembly and FCT Area Council elections scheduled to hold on 2nd of March 2019. On the whole, there are 1,066 candidates for the governorship elections, 14,583 for the state assembly elections and 806 for the FCT Area Council elections broken down into 105 chairmanship candidates and 701 councillorship candidates.

“The commission would like to reaffirm its commitment to obeying all court judgments, even when it disagrees with them. However, these are clearly two contradictory judgments delivered by two courts of coordinate jurisdiction on the same day.

“The commission reviewed the situation concerning the APC fielding candidates for the governorship and state assembly elections in Zamfara State. Commission noted that there are two court judgments on the matter – one from a State High Court in Gusau and the other from a Federal High Court in Abuja.

“The former judgment clearly said that the APC conducted primaries in Zamfara State, contrary to the position of the commission. On the other hand, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the party did not conduct valid primaries and therefore is ineligible to field candidates for the elections.

“Consequently, the commission has decided to maintain its original position that the party in question did not conduct primaries and, therefore, in line with Section 87 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), is not eligible to field candidates for the National Assembly, governorship and state assembly elections in Zamfara State,” Okoye added.
