Edo and Ondo Elections: US imposes visa ban on electoral offenders

The United States Government says it has imposed visa restrictions individuals who played detrimental roles during the elections that held in November 2019 in both Bayelsa Kogi and State and in the run up to the Edo and Ondo State governorship polls on 19 September and October 10, respectively.

While the elections in Edo and Ondo states are still being awaited, the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has imposed the visa restriction on the individuals whose roles leading to the polls were adjudged as detrimental to the growth of democracy in the country.

The statement read in part, “In July 2019, we announced the imposition of visa restrictions on Nigerians, who undermined the February and March 2019 elections. Today, the Secretary of State is imposing additional visa restrictions on individuals for their actions surrounding the November 2019 Kogi and Bayelsa State elections and in the run up to the September and October 2020 Edo and Ondo states’ elections.

The Secretary stated that the actions are directed only at the said individuals and not towards the country, Nigeria. He reiterated the commitment of the United States to the growth and improvement in the democracy and democratic ideals in Nigeria.

The identity of the individuals on whom the visa restrictions were imposed were not made public.
