INEC foresees crisis in edo elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has predicted a likely crisis situation ahead of the the governorship elections in Edo states scheduled for September 19 2020.

With such a prediction, INEC officials are asking security agencies in the state to take proactive measures to ensure that potential crises areas are properly secured. Specifically, INEC is asking for supplementary code of conduct for security personnel on election duty so as to clarify roles and responsibilities regarding the elections.

This plea was made by the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja on Friday while speaking at the first virtual consultative meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security(ICCES).

He also argued the ICCES to put in place efficient measures of securing and protecting the integrity of the electoral process as the COVID-19 pandemic would impact on the planning and deployment strategy for the conduct of elections generally.

He added that the policies developed by INEC policy on conducting elections under the current global pandemic derives from the guidelines issued by the Presidential Task Force on the COVID-19 based on the advisory by health authorities.

The issued guidelines provide for measures to necessary to protect both the electoral process as well as the people involved, ranging from the election officials, observers, media and, above all, voters.
