Life Expectancy in Nigeria now 55year – UN

The United Nations Population Fund has stated that life expectancy in Nigeria is now 55years and the nation’s population has risen to 201 million people.

This was contained in the 2019 State of the World Population Report released on Monday. From the World Population Dashboard released on the agency’s website, the UN stated that “Nigeria’s population is now 201 million, the largest in Africa, while its immediate neighbours – Benin Republic, Niger, Chad and Cameroon – are 11.8 million, 23.2 million, 15.8 million and 25.3 million people, respectively.”

The UN agency noted that “life expectancy at birth in Nigeria is now 55 years while the maternity mortality ratio is 814 deaths per 100,000 live births as of 2015.” It said that Nigeria’s growth rate was at an average of 2.6 per cent from 2010 to 2019, while the fertility rate among Nigerian women had dropped from 6.4 per cent in 1969 to 5.3 per cent in 2019. This can be interpreted to mean that an average Nigerian woman gives birth to at least five children. UNFPA said 32 per cent of Nigeria’s 201 million population figure were aged between 10 and 24 years, while those aged between 10 and 14 years were 44 per cent.

Also, according to the report, Nigerians aged between 15 and 64 are 54 per cent while the population of those over 65 years is just three per cent. The report said, “Reproductive rights are still out of reach for too many women, including the more than 200 million women globally who want to prevent a pregnancy but cannot access modern contraceptive information and services.

“Life expectancy in Nigeria at birth is now 55 years while the maternity mortality ratio is 814 deaths per 100,000 live births as of 2015. “Ultimately, almost all of the 4.3 billion people of reproductive age around the world today will have had inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health services at some point.

“In 1969, the world population reached 3.6 billion, up about one billion from only 17 years earlier, leading to the establishment of UNFPA.”

Military action yielding results, says Buhari

Military operations against criminals are yielding the desired results, President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday.

According to the President, the Armed Forces have, by their efforts within the past four years, restored the pride and honour of Nigeria amongst the comity of nations.

President Buhari spoke at the Eagle Square, Abuja as the Special Guest of Honour during the Parade/Orbat Flypast/Aerial Display by the Nigerian Air Force to commemorate its 55 anniversary.

Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the President was treated to a colourful parade by the Six Commands of the NAF. He inducted two new Agusta 109 attack helicopters recently acquired by the service.

At the event were: Chief of Defence (CDS) Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai; representative of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) and Acting Inspector-General (IG) Mohammed Adamu.

President Buhari said: “I am very delighted to be in your midst today to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the NAF. Since the establishment of the NAF in 1964 by an Act of the Nigerian Parliament, the Nigerian Air Force has been fulfilling its Constitutional mandate of preserving Nigeria’s territorial integrity through the employment and projection of air power.

“As a country, we are particularly proud that in less than 4 years, we have been able to revitalise our armed forces for the full restoration of Nigeria’s territorial integrity that was once violated by Boko Haram insurgents.

“As the air arm of the armed forces, the Nigerian Air Force has continued to play very crucial roles in degrading the fighting capabilities of the Boko Haram Terrorists in North East where our officers, airmen, soldiers and ratings have performed gallantly.

“Once again, I salute the resolve of our Armed Forces and the invaluable contributions of other security agencies towards the defeat of Boko Haram and other security challenges bedeviling our dear nation.

“Specifically, the contributions of the NAF in addressing the security challenges in the Northwest against armed banditry/cattle rustling and kidnapping is also appreciated.

“Your efforts in conjunction with other security agents have started to yield positive results thereby restoring our pride and honour amongst the comity of nations.
“I also want to thank Nigerians for coming together as a united and determined people, irrespective of political, religious and ethnic affiliations, to wage the war against terror and insurgency.

“We are currently in the stabilisation, reconstruction and resettlement phase of the overall effort in the North East, and we continue to solicit for your support and understanding until terrorism is completely eradicated. We will not relent until every trouble spot within our territory enjoys enduring peace and order.”

Chief Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar commended the President for the support given to the service in the past four years, saying the NAF have been able to acquire new platforms and establish new commands through the magnanimity of the President.

The CAS said: “The 55 years of the existence of the Nigerian Air Force have been very eventful and during this period, the NAF was confronted with a myriad of challenges. However, we were able to surmount these challenges and progressively maturing in the process.

“The NAF has also grown in size, spread and equipment holding all in a bid to fulfil its statutory obligation of protecting and defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria from the air. The growth of the NAF since the inception of the Service has been particularly outstanding.

“From having only a few trainers and transport aircraft in the early years of the Service, the Nigerian Air Force currently has an impressive ORBAT comprising diverse aircraft with capabilities to perform a wide spectrum of missions.

“We have also continued to build upon the foundations laid by our noble predecessors by reactivating several aircraft that were hitherto grounded; acquired and inducted various platforms into service and increased the strength of service personnel by 7,500 airmen/airwomen and 400 officers. Additionally, two new commands and two staff branches were established to meet the evolving security challenges we are faced with.”

How To Keep Beards Away From Germs

Beards are so fashionable these days especially the full ones . Men , who keep such facial hair pride themselves as belonging to the ‘ Beard Gang ’. And judging by the manner in , which such individuals flaunt these hairy assets on the social media and in real life, it is obvious that to them, membership of the gang is no mean feat .

For those men , who are not naturally hairy , being able to cultivate a full beard is indeed a big achievement .

Some studies have shown that women find men with full beards attractive – probably one of the reasons most young adults desire to grow full beards these days.

According to a 2013 research by Dixson and Brooks , women see men with full beards as more masculine and even healthier . But how healthy are these beards? And if you want to keep out germs , would you rather isolate dogs or keep out fully bearded men ?

These are indeed serious questions , going by the unusual findings of a research carried out by the Hirslanden Clinic in Switzerland.

The research found out that there are more germs on full beards than on dogs ’ furs. Bearded men carry more germs than dogs , it reckoned. In fact , in the course of the research , it was discovered that every sampled beard contained bacteria and nearly half had bugs that could be hazardous to human health .

The researchers wanted to establish whether it was hygienic to allow dogs into the same MRI machines as humans . They took swabs from the beards of 18 men and the necks of 30 dogs and compared the results .

The research found that all of the bearded men, aged from 18 to 76 , showed high microbial counts , but only 23 out of 30 dogs had the same. The remainder had moderate levels .

“ Our study shows that bearded men harbour a significantly higher burden of microbes and more human -pathogenic strains than dogs , ” one of the researchers , Andreas Gutzeit , explained .

Specifically, the research discovered that seven of the 18 men harboured microbes that posed a threat to human health .

In its conclusions , the research observed that patients should not feel unduly concerned if they happened to find themselves following a dog into an MRI scanner .

“ On the basis of these findings , dogs can be considered as clean compared with bearded men , ” Gutzeit told The Mail on Sunday , which reported the outcome of the research .

Following this development, it becomes very crucial that members of the ‘ Beard Gang ’ should ensure that they keep their beards clean, so as not to endanger the health of people around them.

So how can you keep your full beards free from germs ?

Wash those beards thoroughly , and don ’ t take your bath in just three minutes .

Reacting to the report, a notable dermatologist , Prof Funmilayo Ajose, said the beard must be washed thoroughly to keep it free from germs .

Ajose, who observed that men usually take their bath in just three minutes , noted that those with full beards should spend a longer and more effective time in the shower in order to keep germ – free beards.

She said , “ If you know how men usually take their bath in the morning , you will know that they use like three minutes to bath .

“ If a person who takes his bath like that has beards, he is likely to have beards that are not well groomed .

“ So , if you are going to have beards , you have to understand that beards will require more intensive washing than the skin .

“ If you have beards and you rush over your bath , if you don ’ t make out time to clean your beards as well as you should , your beards will habour germs .

“ But if you are particular about your beards and look after it by washing meticulously, there will be no problem . ”

But Ajose was quick to point out that hairs including beards , are more prone to attract dirt and germs than other areas on the human body .

She expressed reservation over the report ’ s conclusion that dogs could be neater and freer from germs than full bearded men .

The dermatologist observed that the particular dogs that participated in the research are likely to be well – groomed dogs in the first place .

“ What is important is that hair, wherever they are , tend to habour germs . Whether it is in the head , face, chest, armpit , groin , any area – hair tend to harbour more germs than other areas on the human body .

“ The report compared human beard with the fur of animals in order to find out which one is more dangerous in terms of microbes .

“If you look carefully, you will find out that people who are concerned about their dogs to the extent of taking them for MRI , would also be sufficiently concerned to give their dogs very good grooming .

Those dogs are not likely to be dirty dogs ; they are likely to come from a well groomed environment .

“ Some people feel that dogs are dirtier than men , and they may be correct .
“ But some people are now saying if you complain about dogs , why don ’ t you complain about bearded men who don ’ t look after their beards? That is what I deduced from that report , ” she added .

Speaking further , Ajose explained why beards are more likely to come in contact with germs than other parts of the human body .

“ The fact is hair anywhere normally gather dirt and germs . For example the wind blows on your face and if you are bearded , your beards will gather more dust than your skin .

“ If you do not wash the beards adequately , those microbes in your beards will remain there.

“ What is important is that men should know that people with beards need more scrupulous grooming in that area and not to rush over a three-minute bath . Any part of the body where you keep hair must be more thoroughly groomed than the normal skin .
“ You have to understand that the human skin is all covered with microbes, and you have more concentration of microbes in hairy areas than in the non – hairy areas . ”
‘Healthy germs ’ on beards ?
Arguing that the findings of the research are not sacrosanct , Ajose pointed out that some other studies reported that full beards contain ‘ healthy germs ’ .
“ On the contrary , there are also studies that claim bearded men harbour germs that actually kill surrounding germs on their body .
“ The studies reported that bearded men harbour so many germs in their beards and some of the germs can be used to fight certain resistant bacteria .
“ There are so many studies – if you want to push one way , you will find a study to take you that way , if you want to push the other way , you will find a study and most of these studies may not be properly designed.
“ If you have a badly designed study , it will give you a result along the lines that you want , ” she argued .
‘Beard gang ’ no longer attractive ?
With the Swiss clinic’ s research concluding that dogs are cleaner than bearded men, could it be that belonging to the beard gang would no longer be fashionable ?
Ajose said no .
“ I don ’ t believe in that report , I cannot take it as sacrosanct because I cannot link it to any scholarly publication.
“ I could not see that it was a well -designed, unbiased study and I cannot hold that report as authentic evidence to anything .
“ All that I can tell you is that hair, on any part of the body , will habour germs and if you want to keep hair anywhere on the body , you have to understand that it requires special maintenance , ” she said .Beards are so fashionable these days especially the full ones . Men , who keep such facial hair pride themselves as belonging to the ‘ Beard Gang ’ . Go if you can’t work without pay, Commissioner tells Cross River workers

Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Godwin Etta, has ordered workers owed 18 months salaries to go home and stay if they cannot exercise patience anymore.

Etta stated this while addressing workers of the Examinations Results Centre (ERC) of the state Ministry of Education who protested in Calabar against 18 months salaries’ arrears.

The workers claimed they were first engaged as ad hoc staff in 2015, but were absorbed as permanent staff into the state civil service payrolls through formal appointment letters in November 2017.

The commissioner, who described the workers as ingrates and unreasonable, said Governor Ben Ayade has done a lot to pay workers monthly without fail, even with paltry monthly federal allocation of N2 billion.

“These people were engaged as temporary staff and their stipends paid regularly. The governor was kind enough to direct their absorption into the state workforce which process we are still on.

They are ungrateful. If they won’t have patience any more, they are free to leave,” he said.

Spokesperson for the workers, Mr. Johnson Agbor, said they had met several times with Ettah, over their plight where they had appealed for payment of the salaries backlog.

He said: “I can tell you that we have our formal letters of appointment as permanent staff. We are civil servants under the state ministry of education since November 2017. We have not received salaries for 18 months.”

We’re set to work with Wike –Amaechi’s APC faction

All Progressives Congress (APC) faction loyal to Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has accepted to work with the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking on behalf of elected and appointed members of APC at the factional party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt, Senator Andrew Uchendu, said they were ready to work with Governor Wike for the progress of the state.

Governor Wike had, on April 17, during a broadcast after he received his certificate of return, extended his hand of fellowship to Rivers people, including all political parties, which have been engaged in the struggle for power to guarantee a better life for the people of the state.

Uchendu said there was no need to continue political fight, while the state needs development, adding that, if Rivers people could come together, insecurity would be nipped in the bud.

The APC chieftain commended Wike for the call for collaboration for peaceful Rivers State, noting that their leader and the immediate past governor, Amaechi, has also accepted the call for friendship, in the interest of the development and peaceful co-existence.

“About two weeks have passed since this broadcast was made and as stakeholders in the Rivers project, we have waited with bated breath in the hope that we would see deliberate actions arising from that broadcast geared towards rebuilding our state and restoring the dignity of every Rivers person.

“We believe Governor Wike is sincere in this initiative. It is for this reason we want to commend Governor Wike’s call for collaboration and peaceful co-existence.

“Happily enough, Amaechi, in his Easter message re-echoed Governor Wike’s position on the fact that Rivers State has suffered enough and that every true son and daughter should be prepared to make the necessary sacrifice for the return of peace in our land.

“We hope his clarion call is one that should signal the end of politicking and the beginning of governance. It is our considered opinion that Rivers people must now become the centre of all politics and governance.

“We cannot continue to toy with the lives of our people or take them for granted any longer. A key indicator of good governance is the return of peace and security in the state,” he said.

Reacting to the APC faction’s acceptance to work with the government, Mr. Emma Okah, Commissioner for Informationa, said it was a welcome devlopment.
He said the Rivers State government has always wanted to work with everybody and has been extending the olive branch towards this end.

“In 2015, we asked them to work with us. They didn’t accept it. This year again, we did. That they have accepted is a welcome devlopment. We hope they will match their promise witb good intention and positive action for the progress of Rivers State.”

Meanwhile, the APC has urged the governor to concentrate more on insecurity and called for strategic approach to tackle the menace for development to thrive.

“Thankfully, Governor Wike can draw from the experience of his predecessor, Amaechi, who inherited a state that was plagued by massive insecurity and infrastructural decay.”
